For those of you who haven’t seen it, this is the logo for the US Postal Service:
This is one of the best single pieces of graphic design I’ve ever seen. Why? it’s simple and powerful. A few straight lines and simple curves evoke almost perfectly the qualities of speed, resolve, and competence, which is exactly what the Postal Service would like to convey about itself.
In mathematics and computer science, we say that something (a proof, a program) that accomplishes its task simply is elegant. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s what this is:
elegant.
If I never need a piece of graphic design that’s simple and evocative, I’ll call whoever came up with the USPS logo.
